Role and Responsibilities:
The Custodian/Janitor is responsible for performing a variety of custodial duties, minor maintenance tasks, and other miscellaneous duties to ensure that buildings and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary condition. This crucial role contributes to the overall cleanliness and functionality of the organization's premises.
  • Clean and maintain offices, meeting chambers, and recreational facilities to uphold cleanliness standards.
  • Mop tile and concrete floor areas to remove dirt and spills, ensuring a clean and safe environment.
  • Vacuum all carpeted areas to remove dust and debris, maintaining a well-groomed appearance.
  • Dust all furniture and fixtures as required, keeping surfaces free from dust and dirt.
  • Wash and disinfect all washroom floors, toilets, toilet seats, hand dryers, and fixtures to promote hygiene.
  • Clean all mirrors to ensure a clear and presentable reflection.
  • Replenish toilet tissue and soap as needed to maintain restroom supplies.
  • Empty all waste baskets and garbage cans, ensuring proper disposal of waste.
  • Place garbage in outside storage bins for scheduled pickup.
  • Clean entrance and exit areas, including glass, doors, and hardware, for a welcoming appearance.
  • Keep outside areas near exits and entrances clear of snow, litter, and debris.
  • Clean, wash, and disinfect drinking fountains to provide clean and safe drinking water.
  • Remove finger marks from walls, doors, hardware, and glass surfaces to maintain a clean environment.
  • Clean break room sinks and counters, promoting cleanliness in common areas.
  • Report any damages and acts of vandalism promptly to address maintenance and security concerns.
  • Operate floor polishers to wash and buff floors, ensuring they maintain a polished appearance.
  • Wash entrance and exit floors to prevent slip hazards and maintain a clean entryway.
  • Clean walls and toilet partitions to uphold overall facility cleanliness.
Key Skills and Abilities:
  • Lifting: Ability to lift objects weighing up to 20 pounds regularly, which is essential for tasks involving moving cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Pushing and Pulling: Capable of pushing and pulling carts with a force of up to 70 pounds, facilitating the transportation of cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Reach: Ability to reach in all directions to clean and access various areas, including high and low spaces.
  • Standing: Comfortable standing for extended periods during cleaning tasks.
  • Stooping, Crouching, and Bending: Willingness and physical capability to stoop, crouch, and bend when necessary to clean low surfaces and hard-to-reach areas.
  • Walking: Able to walk extensively throughout the work area to cover all cleaning responsibilities.
  • Twisting: Flexibility to twist the body when cleaning or reaching for objects from different angles.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma and/or GED.
  • Ability to work directly with disabled individuals.
Physical Demands:
The Custodian/Janitor position is a physically demanding position. While preforming the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is frequently required to use to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls. The incumbent must spend the entire time at work standing, walking, lifting heavy objects, operating medium- weight equipment. The incumbent is required to do a great deal of stretching and bending, often in awkward positions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions. The incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
