Job Description
The Program Manager, Nursing Retention is responsible for partnering with Executive Nursing Leaders in designing, collaborating, implementing, and sustaining a VCU Health System nursing enterprise retention model and program.

This position will utilize a data-driven, evidenced based approach to nursing retention that is market competitive. This program will be developed in partnership with Executive Nursing Leaders (including but not limited to: the Chief Nursing Executive/ Chief Nursing Officer/ Associate Chief Nursing Officers), Human Resources (including but not limited to: Talent Acquisition, Talent Management and Organizational Development), Education and Professional Development, Enterprise Communications, Clinical Team Members, and other key stakeholders and will be aligned with organizational and nursing's strategic plan.

Essential Job Statements

  • Provide strategic leadership in the development and implementation of initiatives to enhance nurse retention and engagement.

  • Foster strong partnerships with executive nursing leaders, human resources, and key stakeholders to develop and implement retention strategies aligned with organizational priorities and goals.

  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to enhance the VCU Health System nursing professional image.

  • Partners with the Talent Acquisition team to execute strategic initiatives aimed to enhance recruitment (including attendance at national nursing conferences).

  • Partners with the Talent Acquisition team to build relationships with School of Nursing programs/affiliations and conducts onsite and/or virtual visits

  • Utilizes data analytics to analyze turnover trends, engagement metrics, and other relevant data to inform strategic decision-making.

  • Develop evidence-based or innovative retention strategies that address the unique needs of nursing across VCUHS entities.

  • Identifies enterprise opportunities based upon 1:1 exit/ intent to leave interview data in partnership with Human Resources

  • Creates and supports a culture of internal transfer and professional advancement.

  • Play a key role in achieving and maintaining organizational excellence by supporting efforts to obtain and sustain nursing excellence designations such as ANCC Magnet and Pathway to Excellence.

  • Promote a culture of recognition and advancement by developing and sustaining meaningful recognition programs and events for nursing services (Examples include but are not limited to: DAISY Program, Beacon, Week of the Nurse, Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Appreciation, Recognition and Development Model)

Patient Population

Demonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.

Employment Qualifications


Required Education:

Masters Degree in Nursing

Preferred Education:

Doctoral degree in Nursing, Business, or Healthcare Administration

Licensure/Certification Required:

Active registered nursing licensure in Virginia or eligible compact state

Licensure/Certification Preferred:

Nursing Specialty Certification

Minimum Qualifications

Years and Type of Required Experience

Ten (10) years of healthcare experience, Five (5) years of progressive nursing administrative leadership experience

Working Conditions


Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.

General office environment.

Required to car travel to off-site locations, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
May have periods of constant interruptions.

Prolonged periods of working alone.
