About the Department:

Educate: Prioritize academic achievement and recruit student-athletes who can be successful academically, strengthen ICA's commitment to diversity and inclusion, and provide consistent education for coaches and sport administrators.

Compete: Position teams to consistently compete for conference success and recruit student-athletes who possess the ability to excel athletically from a conference and national perspective.

Engage: Prioritize the experience and personal well-being of student-athletes, develop and renovate athletics facilities in accordance with University and ICA objectives and priorities, generate resources necessary to support the student-athlete experience, competitiveness, and infrastructure, and foster and inspire partnerships within the department, University, the surrounding community, and the corporate community.

About the Position:

The primary role of this position is to provide teaching, coaching, and technical expertise needed to allow student-athlete to compete at their highest competitive potential. Additionally, it is also a primary responsibility of the incumbent to be cognitive to all coaching and/or teaching duties associated with the program. This includes but is not limited to the oversight and management of the safety and well-being of those student-athletes assigned to their coaching care. In the absence of the Head Coach, the incumbent is expected to act on behalf of the Head Coach on any and all related program issues. The Associate Head Coach will assist the Head Coach in all aspects of a highly competitive Division I program.

Responsibilities:

Teaching and Coaching:

  • Utilize sound teaching techniques in the conduct of game preparation and practice sessions;
  • Act as the lead on technical instruction at all practices;
  • Assist with or make strategic decisions in contest situations;
  • Effectively prepare, lead, and organize pre-season, in-season, and post-season conditioning programs and practice sessions;
  • Assist with oversight of the strength and conditioning development of the athletes;
  • Assist the Head Coach and provide direct evaluation of the student-athletes; and
  • Be aware and maintain a safe and healthy environment for the student-athletes.

Department, University, Conference and NCAA Compliance:

  • Abide by and promote the aims, goals, and objectives established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach;
  • Abide by and promote the policies, guidelines, rules, regulations and criteria established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach for the student-athlete;
  • Know, understand and assure that the student-athletes abide by all the University, Atlantic 10, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Rules and Regulations;
  • Know, understand and abide by all University, A10 and NCAA Rules and Regulations;
  • Be aware and abide by the rules of confidentiality (Buckley Amendment);
  • Understand and abide by proper procedures of due process in dealing with the student-athlete and staff;
  • Follow the administrative procedures established by the University and written up in the Department Staff Handbook; and
  • Assist Head Coach in developing and implementing the overall recruiting strategy to effectively recruit the best student-athlete within the admissions, financial and regulatory constraints established by the University, A10, and NCAA.

Act as Team Liaison for:

  • Equipment office staff to order, monitor, and control all team equipment;
  • Business Office for all program operations, logistics, planning, and team travel; and
  • Academic Services (study hall and tutoring).

Fundraising:

  • Participate in fundraising efforts and special events.

Other Duties:

  • Perform other duties as requested by the Assistant Vice President/Director of Intercollegiate Athletics or Sport Administrator.

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree or training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree;
  • Demonstrated professional-level oral and written communications skills including grammar;
  • Knowledge of general program procedures;
  • Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills;
  • Must take pride in and be thorough in the quality of work produced;
  • Must possess excellent attention to detail;
  • Must be a team player and interact collegially with co-workers and other constituencies;
  • Must possess strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment in unusual or new situations;
  • Must be able to work independently and must retain confidential information; and
  • CPR/AED Certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in NCAA Division I Athletics.
