JOB SUMMARY:

JOB REQUIREMENTS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Read blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements
2. Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining
3. Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers
4. Calculates and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed coolant, flow, depth, and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media
5. Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications
6. Performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. With proper instruction can perform work tasks on nearly any shipboard machinery not requiring special technical expertise or unique skills
2. Has demonstrated skills and knowledge of all basic work functions required to repair machinery such as measuring clearances and runouts, machine surface dressing and lapping, part fitments and proper task sequencing to avoid extra effort or reversing of progress achieved, and simple coupling alignments
3. Can disassemble equipment causing no harm, and can thoroughly inspect equipment and its parts to determine their condition and if they need repair
4. Can provide data sheets, diagrams, and condition reports to identify the information required to proceed with final repairs
5. Can be relied upon to obtain, organize, account for, and distribute material for ongoing jobs responsibly
6. Can identify good mechanical practices and work ethic, and is reliable to request and obtain those results from workmates and those under their charge
7. Can work effectively on a wide range of shipboard machinery and can manage complete jobs by organizing and instructing others that possess capable skills
8. Ability to identify circumstances and issues that may need further research or clarification such as ordering more detailed references or equipment data not originally provided
9. Can quickly familiarize themselves with new experiences by studying visually and by research from appropriate references
10. Can also be relied upon to work multiple jobs of a like manner, or that are within close proximity to each other
11. Familiar with and can safely and properly operate most types of specialized equipment and tooling to perform the assembly of or testing of assembled machinery
12. Understands the requirements of and can accomplish coupling alignments on all basic equipment and can effectively assist on complex or massive equipment coupling alignments
13. Has first-hand experience with a broad range of shipboard machinery as related to assembly, disassembly, repair, inspection, diagnosis and testing requirements and procedures
14. Ability to supervise, organize and instruct other individuals to perform these same activities
15. Ability to identify individual's capabilities and assign them productive work accordingly on jobs under their charge
16. Can coordinate well with other trades and activities to obtain the most efficient and productive results that are to be expected
17. Recognizes tooling needs (Which tool to use for which application)
18. Self-motivated
19. Ability to solve job issues without need for Supervisory approval
20. Ability to read fit up/alignments measuring devices (rulers/tape, levels, bobs, squares, etc.)
21. Advanced use of power tools (grinders, reciprocating saws, drills etc.)
22. Advanced use of hand tools (hammers, punches, clamps, etc.)
23. Knowledge of power tool safety, (correctly identifying kick direction and pinch points)
24. Advanced use of Layout tools (Calipers, Scribes, Correct accurate punch marks)
25. Advanced knowledge of shipbuilding standards (009-24)
26. Advanced knowledge of inspection standards (009-58)
27. Adheres to fire safety principles (hot work tickets, positioning firewatches, 35' rule, etc.)
28. Ability to instruct others to navigate onboard vessels to find work areas/backsides of work areas
29. Advanced knowledge of industry safety standards/training
30. Adheres to industry safety standards
31. Requires occasional supervision to accomplish work
32. Must be able to work long hours, weekends as required by the supervisor to support project schedule. Must be able to work OT and weekends in short notice and must have reliable transportation.
33. Other duties as assign by supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High school diploma or GED required and 4 or more years of related experience or equivalent of training and experience in field
2. Ability to gain access to military installations
3. Must pass drug test and background check

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and seek help with weights over 50 pounds
2. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs/vertical ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
This is a physically demanding position and may accommodate some physical disabilities. Physical dexterity may be required when performing walk thru and inspection of job sites. In the performance of the walk thru you will be required to transverse steep stairwells, vertical ladders and bending or stooping thru tight spaces. There may be occasional lifting of materials weighing not more than 50 pounds.


ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

This position works on the jobsite. There is exposure to hostile environments, loud noises, hazardous chemicals/fumes and airborne particles, smoke, extreme temperatures moving mechanical parts: high, precarious places.

During work-site visits will be required to wear appropriate PPE including, but not limited to:

Hard hat
Ear plugs or attenuator
Safety shoes
Dust mask or respirator
Gloves
