Job Description
Child trends (www.childtrends.org) is looking for a diverse group of DC high school students (you should have completed 10th or 11th grade this year) with an interest in behavioral health to join our team July 5 through August 5. The District of Columbia's Department of Behavioral Health has hired Child Trends to evaluate their efforts to make sure all schools in DC are able to support students' positive behavioral health. Students selected for the internship will work with our research team to decide on one or two questions they would like to answer about behavioral health support in schools using survey data that were collected from students, families, and school staff in February and March of this year.

If selected, you will work with our research team and your fellow interns to answer your research questions and present your findings. For example, you might make graphs in Excel to present the data, work with our research team to gather additional information from other students through interviews or group discussions, and/or write up summaries of the data. You will work closely with our research team and the other interns to figure the best way to answer the questions and you don't need to have any experience with analyzing data or writing data summaries for the internship.

In addition to answering research questions, you will also have a chance to meet with leaders in DC government to learn more about how data is used to make decisions about supporting behavioral health in schools and will have the opportunity to present their findings to the Coordinating Council on School Behavioral Health.

  • Who can apply? Current D.C. high school students who have completed the 11th or 12th grade this year. You will need to be at least 16 years old and eligible to work in the United States to be hired for this position. The status of anyone else in your family won't matter and won't be asked.
  • How will I be paid? This position will pay $20/hr
  • When will the internship happen? This internship will be from July 5 through August 5, 2022. You will need to be able to spend approximately 10 hours per week working on the project, including attending 2 to 3 online meetings each week, the rest of the work can be completed when your schedule allows.
  • Where will I be working? This internship will be remote so the work can be done at home, but you will need access to a computer with an internet connection. Although there may be opportunities for some in-person meetings. Because the work will mostly be conducted virtually, you will need access to a computer and the internet to do some work on your own.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please complete the application by June 17.

If you have any questions or concerns about this internship or applying, please contact strengtheningschools(at)childtrends.org.
