Inside Machine Shop Dimensional Inspector
Purpose:
Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a Quality Assurance Dimensional Inspector for its Inside Machine Shop in Norfolk, VA.
The Inside Machine Shop Dimensional Inspector will assess and verify the quality of production operations and finished machined parts. Inspector is responsible for conducting, documenting, and maintaining records associated with inspection per customer and contractual requirements.
Job Description:
  • Conducts visual and dimensional inspections to ensure quality of finished products.
  • Routinely use manual dimensional measuring instruments to assess quality of items manufactured.
  • Determines and uses appropriate inspection processes to confirm assigned products and parts meet specifications.
  • Verifies quality of finished parts.
  • Documents and tracks final measured results of machining operations.
  • Prepares reports documenting inspection findings.
  • Interface with Customer/Government/Third Party inspectors to accomplish required inspections.
  • Perform surveillance as needed or assigned.
  • Use 3D dimensional inspection software and hardware when required.
  • Generate reports of conditions found during inspection activities, notify production, Superintendents and Quality Assurance/Quality Control management of significant problems, completes documentation necessary to attest to satisfactory completion of inspection or test activities.
  • Inspects machined parts for defects associated with grinding and machining, such as heat stress cracking and tearing.
  • Analyzes documentation, such as drawings, military specifications and standards, Quality Verification Plan (QVP), Quality Assurance Procedures (QAP), Procurement Inspection Plans (PIP), etc., to determine the level of inspection and the best method of inspection and tooling required to perform the inspection.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and 1 year of Quality Assurance experience.
  • Must have extensive knowledge and use of inspection and measurement techniques and equipment.
  • Must be able to read blueprints and contract requirements.
  • Must have experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Must have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills as well as verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office or similar software to prepare reports.
  • Must have a current driver's license and a good DMV driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of machining and machining processes preferred.
  • Prefer at least 2 years' experience in machine shop Quality Assurance/Control or machining background.
Security Requirements:
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain access to government/customer facilities.
Travel Requirements:
  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
